06/30/60 More than 40 stock car drivers will compete in the Daytona Firecracker 250

4141 (ROLL FILM) More than 40 of the Nations top stock car drivers will compete in Mondays Daytona Firecracker 250. (TAKE FILM) This is film of last years race. It is a NASCAR affair at the Daytona International Speedway July 4th which gets underway at 11 AM. The drivers wont know until Sunday afternoon just how they line up for the 250 mile run. Four 25-mile qualifying races are scheduled for Sunday afternoon, starting at 2 oclock, and if theyre anything like the two January 31st they should be pretty good. Cotton Owens of Spartanburgh South Carolina reached a speed of 149 miles per hour in the 25 mile qualifyer. Some names which should be familiar to Virginia racing fans will be on hand. From Charlotte, North Carolina, Lee and Richard Petty will run fresh from their disqualifications at the Charlottee 5-hundred a couple of weeks ago. They will drive 1960 Plymouths. Junior Johnson of Ronda, North Carolina will be on hand also. He won the second annual Daytona 500 last February with a 59 Chevrolet. He plans to drive a 60 (FILM ROLLING) (FILM ROLLING) Cheve this time. Fireball Roberts and Jack Smith will drive Pontiacs in this years Firecracker match. Im told the Pontiacs put in a good show at the Charlotte race a few weeks ago. There was one bad smashup last year as a T-bird went out of control…….lets hope the same doesnt happen this year……especially on the way to and from the track on this long 4th of July weekend.
